Abstract - The Awareness of COVID-19 and Influenza In Our Lives via Hand-washing and VaccinesThe Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan, China in late 2019. In 2020, the virus spread all over the world to around 200 countries and every single state in the United States and was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020 by the WHO. People around the world were very concerned and there were worldwide outcries of concerns, along with severe problems in the economy - national lockdowns, businesses shutting down, hospitals restricting visitation rights, etc. Due to the limitation of treatments, preventatives are integral in restricting the spread of this highly contagious virus - the first being the ability to correctly wash your hands. It was predicted that the majority of people would know the true recommendation from the CDC for appropriate hand washing, would get rather close to 20 seconds when timed, be aware of the influenza and coronavirus differences, and would get the flu vaccine because everyone would get a coronavirus vaccine. In a sample size of 216 people, 48% of those surveyed were aware that 20 seconds is integral for maximal protection. 32% were within 2 seconds of 20 seconds when timed to get as close to 20 seconds. 60% were unaware of the dangers of the influenza virus when compared to the coronavirus. 59% got their flu vaccines, but 81% would get a coronavirus vaccine if it came out. Awareness for the contagious nature of this virus, the ability to prevent it through washing hands effectively, and stressing the flu vaccine were the key concepts discussed in this experiment.
